Kyiv Training Update: Mechanical Ventilation and POCUS Education at the Ukrainian Society of Anesthesiology Annual Congress
HUH educator Aliaksei Pustavoitau visited Kyiv to deliver focused teaching on mechanical ventilation and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) during the annual congress of the Ukrainian Society of Anesthesiology supporting frontline clinicians with practical, high-impact skills.
Kyiv, Ukraine September 2025 As part of our Medical Education for Ukraine campaign, Aliaksei Pustavoitau traveled to Kyiv to provide two focused educational sessions mechanical ventilation and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) during the annual congress of the Ukrainian Society of Anesthesiology.
This congress brings together anesthesiologists and critical care clinicians from across Ukraine. Teaching in this setting is a powerful way to share practical skills, discuss challenging cases, and support clinicians who manage complex trauma and critical illness under extraordinary conditions.
Session 1: Mechanical ventilation — practical decision-making in critical care
Aliaksei’s mechanical ventilation teaching emphasized approaches clinicians can apply immediately, including:
- Setting ventilation goals and adjusting parameters safely
- Troubleshooting common problems (oxygenation, ventilation, patient–ventilator dyssynchrony)
- Lung-protective strategies and bedside decision frameworks
- Case-based discussion of real ICU scenarios
The session focused on clarity, safety, and practicality—meeting clinicians where they are and strengthening day-to-day ICU decision-making.

Session 2: POCUS — faster bedside assessment and better-informed care
In a separate session, Aliaksei taught POCUS concepts designed to help clinicians quickly assess critically ill patients, including:
- Core scanning approaches for rapid bedside evaluation
- Practical interpretation frameworks
- Using ultrasound findings to guide immediate management decisions
- Integrating POCUS into workflow in emergency and perioperative settings
POCUS is a uniquely high-impact tool: it improves speed and confidence in decision-making—especially when resources are limited and time matters.

Why this matters
HUH’s mission is to deliver evidence-based, bedside-relevant education that clinicians can use immediately—supported by targeted tools and ongoing collaboration with Ukrainian colleagues. Training at national professional meetings helps spread best practices rapidly and reinforces the professional networks that sustain long-term clinical improvement.

Thank you
We are grateful to the Ukrainian Society of Anesthesiology for hosting these sessions and to the clinicians who participated and shared questions, cases, and insights. Ukraine’s healthcare professionals continue to demonstrate remarkable skill and resilience, and we are honored to support them through education.
